As winter approaches, a breakdown is the last thing you want. There are many things you can do to prepare your car and its tyres for the winter, however. Keeping your vehicle and tyres well maintained throughout the colder months will save you money on repairs and emergency call-outs, keep you on the road during terrible weather and help keep you safe.
You can always take a trip to your local garage for a basic vehicle check or special winter check up, but there are plenty of other things you can do yourself at home to keep your car in top condition during the winter.
Firstly, check your lights: turn them on and take a walk around the car to ensure they’re all working properly. Check your fog lights and hazards too, as well as the full beam of your headlights which you may need on dark country roads or in awful weather conditions.
Next, check your windscreen for chips or cracks (especially after a very cold snap). It’s better to cover your windscreen to prevent build up of ice and snow rather than pouring hot water on it – in fact, this can be damaging to the glass and if you need to remove snow and ice, stick to de-icer or some elbow grease and a scraper. Your windscreen wipers should be in decent condition, or you might find they don’t quite do the job when you need them most! Keep your washer fluid topped up and the levels are balanced for cold weather – you don’t want it to freeze! Another little tip is to check that the washer fluid nozzles are clear of gunk and debris – this is a quick (and cheap) fix if you think your washers aren’t working to full capacity.
Your tyres are especially important during winter, as they are your first port of call when it comes to keeping a firm grip on the road in bad conditions. For wet, icy or snow-covered roads, winter tyres are the best bet, as they provide improved traction and will not become stiff or inflexible in sub-zero temperatures. If you stick to regular tyres, ensure that they are properly inflated and have legal tread depth (at least 1.6mm), though at least 3mm is recommended during winter to keep you on the road. There is a myth that reducing your tyre pressure will help improve grip on snowy roads but this is not true, and can affect your handling and stability, so should be avoided. Consult your vehicle handbook for the correct tyre pressure for your type of tyres in winter and stick to it!
